Interpreting the results – What does your BMI mean?

Less than 18.5: underweight

• BMI < 18.5 → You are underweight, it may be useful to adjust your diet to reach a healthy weight.

18.5 - 24.9: normal weight

• BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 → Your weight is within the normal range, this is the objective to maintain.

25 - 29.9: overweight

• BMI between 25 and 29.9 → You are overweight, a balanced diet and physical activity can help you regain an optimal weight.

30 years and over: obesity

• BMI > 30 → Your index indicates obesity, it is recommended to consult a health professional for appropriate monitoring.

The Limits of BMI: Why Is It Not Always Enough?

Muscle mass distorts results

BMI is a good overall indicator, but it doesn't take into account your body composition. A very muscular athlete can have a high BMI without being overweight, or even obese! This is why it's often useful to supplement this with a body fat percentage calculation for a more accurate analysis. Ideally, you should have a high-performance impedance scale.

Interpreting your body fat percentage

Body fat percentage represents the proportion of body fat in relation to total body weight. Here are some guidelines to help you interpret your results:

For men:
• Athletic: 6 - 13%
• In shape: 14 - 17%
• Normal: 18 - 24%
• High: 25% and more

For women:
• Athletic: 14 - 20%
• In shape: 21 - 24%
• Normal: 25 - 31%
• High: 32% and above

Too low a body fat percentage can lead to health risks (deficiencies, hormonal disorders), while too high a percentage can be associated with cardiovascular risks. These benchmarks are indicative and should be interpreted based on your lifestyle, age, and personal goals.
